As we head into the spring season, seasonal allergies are sure to arrive with it. What do you do about it? Many may try to grin and bear the symptoms or turn to medications to keep symptoms at bay. However, there is another option. MSM may help alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms.
Studies have shown that oral consumption of MSM supplements significantly reduces nasal symptoms such as congestion, discharge, and itching. At higher doses, it was also shown to reduce itchy and watery eyes. This effect was observed within 1 to 2 weeks of starting the MSM. Some allergy medications don’t reach full effectiveness until nearly a month of consistent use.
I personally have experienced the benefits of MSM in regards to seasonal allergies. Before I started taking the MSM, I began having some rather severe allergy symptoms in the early spring every year. The congestion was so bad, I thought it was a cold at first. I tried using a nasal spray, which helped, but caused nose bleeds if I used it for longer than a couple months. The first spring I was taking MSM consistently, I was shocked to find that I had very minimal allergy symptoms compared to what I usually had. I no longer needed to rely on drugs to manage my symptoms; I could simply take my daily MSM dosage and go about my day. That is not to say I don’t have some seasonal allergy symptoms, but they are so much milder that I barely notice them.
Not only does this provide an improvement in quality of life during allergy season, but it could also help your immune system. By reducing your immune system’s unnecessary response to an allergen, it has more resources to use against actual diseases. It also gives peace of mind that you don’t have to worry about balancing the negative side effects of medication with allergy symptoms.
