The "growths" you mother-in-law has are tophi (urate crystals) caused by high blood uric acid (UA)level (hyperuricemia). To eliminate them or to stop them from coming, she must lower the blood UA level to 4-4.5 mg/dL. It can be achieved by Allopurinol -- to lowers the UA production, or Probenecid/Benemid -- to increase the UA excretion. It's a slow process but they will work. See a rheumatologist about it.
