The Beginning of the End?
July 11, 2007
On July 11, 2007, HR2900 which includes S1082 was
passed by a wide margin. Many supplement and
alternative health sites are saying that the passage of
these bills is the beginning of the end of supplements
as we know them today.
As many of you know, Codex regulations have long
been winding their way toward eliminating or at least
severely curtailing effective nutritional supplements.
But it appears that this latest threat comes from the
FDA and big pharma companies who are seeing their
market threatened by those of us who choose to use
supplements for our health. Even though the pharma
companies are making huge profits, it is not enough
for them and they want the whole pie even though they
already control most of the pieces.
Time to Panic?
So is it time to panic and buy all of the supplements
that you will need or want for the rest of your life? This
remains to be seen at this point. Several legislators
voiced their concern that these new bills would gut
DSHEA, which is the law that provides access to
supplements now. They were assured by the bill's
sponsors that it would do no such thing, but we have
never seen a legislator lie before, have we?
The main thrust of the bill regarding supplements is
that the FDA can regulate the use of any supplements
used to treat or cure anything. But this has actually
been the case for quite some time now because
anytime a supplement vendor makes a claim about
curing or helping a disease, the FDA and FTC has
been fairly quick to step in and shut them down, at
least until all claims are removed. So for quite some
time suppements have not been able to treat or cure
anything.
My concern is that our government
is slowly taking more and more away from us. And the
process is so slow that most people are not noticing
because the steps are so small. But I think that
someday supplements will be a thing of the past if
more people do not get involved and actively contact
their senators and representatives about this
situation. I'm not saying when supplements will go
away, but I feel they may be starting to slip through our
fingers even now.
Please take the time to
research more information about HR2900 and about
codex regulations (aka codex alimentarius). Simply go
to www.google.com and type in HR2900 or codex. You
will find lots of information that will be frightening if you
are a supplement consumer.
